The Lotus Essex Turbo Esprit Sports Car

http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
A review of The Lotus Essex Turbo Esprit Sports Car, covering development, important features, and technical data of this the nineteenth model in the Lotus range.
In this Article, I offer a nostalgic look at the Lotus Essex Turbo Esprit, one of an elite group of classic cars, which was manufactured during the period 1980 to 1981.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Since turbocharged sports cars were becoming the fashion, Lotus launched its Esprit Turbo sports car in London's Royal Albert Hall, and hosted by its Formula 1 sponsor, Essex Petroleum.
It was designated the Essex Commemorative Lotus Esprit Turbo, also known as the Type 82, and was only available in its sponsor's livery of blue, red, and silver.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
It was the introduction of this model that elevated the Esprit into the supercar league. Production began in February 1980, at an initial rate of ten units a week.
It was powered by the 2174 cc, 16 valve, double overhead cam, Type 910 engine, similar to that used in the Sunbeam Lotus "hot hatch".
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
With a compression ratio of 7.5:1, it was fitted with an AiResearch Garrett T3 turbocharger, providing a boost of up to 8psi, and two twin choke Dell'Orto DHLA4OH carburettors.
With this arrangement, the 4-cylinder, aluminium engine developed 210 bhp at 6250 rpm, and 200 ft/lbs of torque at 4500 rpm, and produced a top speed of 152 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 secs.
It used the same five speed gearbox as the then current Esprit, and was fitted to the engine block using a new alloy bell housing.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The backbone steel chassis had been redesigned, and was now zinc galvanized with, interestingly, a five year guarantee, based on normal use.
The front suspension, based on that used in the Lotus Elite Mark 2, incorporated a widening of the track by one inch. The rear suspension was also revised.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
It used 10.5 inch front disc brakes, and 9.7 inch discs at the rear, together with a larger servo unit.
External changes included:
  • There were large, wrap around front and rear bumpers
  • Wide front spoiler to increase air flow to the radiator and oil cooler
  • Further improvements to the car's aerodynamics
  • Tailgate was redesigned to increase airflow and cooling
  • Ducts were positioned in the sills to further create cooling in the engine compartment
  • A distinctive rear spoiler was added to increase high speed stability
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The basic cockpit design by Guigiaro was unchanged from the Series 2 Esprit, although there were a number of minor alterations to the instrument panel. A stereo cassette unit was added, the seats were revised, and three piece 15 inch alloy wheels were fitted.
The fact that the Esprit Turbo included a dry sump engine caused a number of adverse comments from the press.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
According to Lotus, the oil level needed to be checked no more than two minutes after switching off the engine. However, some press commentators found, after two minutes, huge variations in the oil level reading, and sometimes the very short dipstick showed no reading at all.
The implication, therefore, was to play safe, and ensure that the tank was slightly overfull, which was contrary to what Lotus advised.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Following such confusion, Lotus subsequently no longer incorporated the dry sump system. In total, 45 Essex Turbo Esprits were built, together with 59 dry sump Turbo cars, using the same specifications, but without the Essex livery.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
This model displayed a marked improvement in reliability compared with some previous Esprit variants. Production of the Essex Turbo ended in April 1981.
Finally, in April 1981, the name Essex Turbo Esprit Type 82 was changed to Turbo Esprit Type 82, and this model offered a more traditional range of colours, whilst air conditioning and leather seats became optional extras.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
As a result, the selling price could be reduced, with a corresponding increase in sales. A total of 2,274 units of this latter model were built. This marked the end of the Lotus Essex Turbo Esprit

Perhaps this stroll down memory lane might have answered, or at least shed light on, a possible question.

How To Install Car Audio

http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/

This reading is going to contain the basics for installing everything from power upgrades to how to install door speakers. I will touch on power upgrades under the hood, amplifier installation, speaker installation, head unit installation, and sub woofer installation.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The first thing I would recommend to anyone buying audio equipment would be to talk to someone that knows what they are talking about and then purchase online! I say this because audio equipment tends to be grossly overpriced and typically most audio shops will not have exactly everything you need. The system in my car was purchased online down to the ring terminals I used.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Also for audio installation there are plenty of videos on YouTube that are of great use during beginner installation. All of that being said talk to someone who knows what they are talking about, come up with a budget, determine what you want out of your system (loud, high quality, etc.), and finally purchase the necessary components on the internet.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Amplifiers draw a lot of power from a cars battery so the first thing that should be done is to "beef up" the electrical system in your car. In varies in the degree of application, very high powered amps will require a second battery and multiple amps could require a second battery, but it can also be as simple as something like the big 3. The big 3 is a basic way to improve the flow of electricity from the alternator to the battery to the ground.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
For this you will need some good wire I use 0 gauge wire and some ring terminals, I recommend spending the extra dollar for the good ring terminals. Lastly, you could include a fuse, but it is not necessary. Get your wires all to the right length appropriately attach the ring terminals. Now you're ready to add these three wires the first wire goes between the alternators positive and the positive post on the battery.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The second wire goes from the ground on the engine to the negative post on your battery. The last wire goes from any bare metal place you can find in the engine bay to the negative post on your battery. Once you have installed these three wires the electrical system in your car is ready for a rather powerful system.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The next thing to do is install the head unit. This part varies a lot from car to car. Newer cars may require professional installation depending on how much is integrated into the stereo component of your car. For older cars it tends to be as easy as buying an installation kit popping the old one out and popping the new one in, this is where speaking with a professional comes into play. A professional would be able to tell you these things.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
After your electrical system is beefed up and your head unit is installed next is the amplifiers and capacitors. In my setup I used two amps. So that is what I will explain the installation of. One amp is for the sub woofers only and the other amp is for the speakers in the car. There are three wires in your car that have to go from your amp all the way to the front of your car.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
This is the hardest part of the installation because it requires drilling a hole through the fire wall, installing a fuse in your car and feeding the wire to the trunk (where most amps are placed in cars). The other two wires are the remote wire, which tells the amp when to turn on and off and the RCA cables which are the actual audio cables. That all being said when you're done there should be RCA cables, remote wire, and power wire (positive) in the trunk.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
This is when you would want to find a bare metal place in the trunk and attach a ground wire, preferably the same gauge as the power wire. After you have your ground and your positive wires then you need to add your splitters which will split your ground and your positive wires into two wires. So now in the trunk you should have a power wire with a splitter splitting into two power wires, a ground wire on bare metal with a splitter splitting it into two ground wires, RCA cables, and a remote wire. This is when you would add the capacitor to the power wire you're going to use for the sub woofer amp. The capacitors main job is to keep the flow of electricity to the amp constant, so if there is a drop in voltage the capacitor will release some energy.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Now finally the installation of the amps is possible. I recommend finding somewhere to fasten the amps in the trunk as opposed to letting them slide around. This is when you connect the power wire to the positive connection on both amps. The ground wire to the negative connection on the amp. The RCA cables to the red/white/left/right ports on the amp.
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Lastly connect the remote wire to the remote port on the amps. During all of these connections the fuse on the power wire should be tripped to avoid being shocked. Once you've connected both amps turn the fuse on turn the head unit on and make sure the amps fire up with it.

The 5 Best Dashboard Cameras For 2014

http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/

Are you planning to join the growing number of people who install a dashboard camera in their car for that extra bit of evidence in case of an accident, road rage, or meteors falling from the sky? Then you may be wondering which one of the dozens of different models is the best choice for you!
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/It's easy to be overwhelmed at first, therefore we have selected the five very best dashboard cameras that you can possibly get in early 2014. We will be looking at dash cams from every price range, starting as low as $50 for a simple-yet effective G1W and moving up the price scale to almost 10 times as much for a top-quality, feature-packed dual-channel camera, the BlackVue DR550GW.
Note that the cameras featured in this article are not necessarily the newest cameras around. We have evaluated technical specifications as well as customer satisfaction for each camera during the course of 2013. Rest assured that the five winners presented here have been field tested by thousands of customers and received excellent feedback all around.
So What Sets A Dash Cam Apart From Other Cameras?
In case you are wondering why you can't just use a regular video camera, or even your phone's cam, it's because a dashboard camera should have all of the following features:
  • Connect to your car's cigarette lighter with a long power cable (at least 12ft) that you can run around the windshield, tucking it away neatly so it is hidden from sight.
  • Auto on/off: Dashboard cameras start recording when you start the car's engine, and stop when you park. That way, you don't have to worry about forgetting to turn your camera on or off.
    http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
  • Loop recording: Enables the camera to overwrite the oldest bit of footage when the memory card is full, so you never run out of disk space.
  • Impact detection / G-sensor: A G-sensor makes sure that if an impact is detected, the video footage immediately preceding and following the impact won't be overwritten by the loop recording feature, so you don't accidentally lose critical evidence.
  • Time and date stamp on video (and speed if we have GPS): useful should you ever need your video footage as evidence in court.
  • Resolution: 1080p (1920×1080 pixels) is pretty much standard in 2014. While there are still a couple of 720p (1280×720 pixels) dash cams available, most new cameras support 1080p resolution.
  • Interfaces: Dash cams generally come with HDMI, USB, and A/V interfaces.
  • Note that the cameras presented here come with all of the features listed above.
  • Storage: Most dashboard cameras support SD cards up to 32GB in size, with the notable exception of the Lukas LK-7900, which supports 128GB of storage capacity.
Having had a look at the basic features a dash cam should have, let's now check out our top camera choices for this year:

The Top 5 Dash Cams In 2014

  • G1W - Decent Video Footage For Tight Budgets
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/

http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
At around $50, this dash cam is an excellent choice if you can't spend a lot of money and just need a security camera, without being too concerned about video quality. The G1W has decent video at day, but night video quality isn't the best. Also, video footage from this camera can often be rather shaky.
Nevertheless, at this price the G1W makes for a decent security camera that will reliably capture what goes on in front of your car.
The G1W comes with an integrated 2.7" screen, which is great for adjusting the field of view and playing back video on the spot. The viewing angle is 120 degrees.
  • Mini 0801 Ambarella - Top Value For Money
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/

http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The Mini 0801 is a small and stylish dashboard camera released in early 2013 that quickly became a best seller. It is available for less than $100 if you go for the basic version without GPS and internal memory. Video quality is great during the daytime, and average at night.
The Mini 0801 has a nice inconspicuous design and features a 1.5" screen for ease of operation. The angle of view is 135 degrees. A GPS logger and 8MB of internal memory are available optionally for around $10 extra each.
A nice feature of this camera is that the electrical contacts for the power supply are built directly into the camera mount, so if you want to remove the camera from your car you can do so without having to unplug the power cable.
  • DOD LS 300W - Excellent Video Quality
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/

http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
Another top seller, the DOD LS300W has excellent video quality day and night. Night vision is augmented by the WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) feature. This, combined with a large aperture of F/1.6 and a high bit rate of about 15 Mbps, makes for one of the highest quality dashboard cameras available to date.
The size of the camera is about the same as the G1W, but at 140 degrees the angle of view is larger. Boot up time is fast and a relatively large 2.7" screen is included for easy video viewing right in your car. The LS300W doesn't have GPS, but there is a newer version called LS330W which comes with an external GPS unit.
  • Lukas LK-7900 - Huge Recording Capacity And Great Heat Resistance
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/

The Lukas LK-7900 is remarkable in two ways: One, it is the first camera to support 128GB SDXC memory cards, allowing for a whopping 28 hours of video footage. Two, this camera can withstand extremely high temperatures of up to 90 degrees Celsius (194 Fahrenheit), which is a great feature to have if you live in a hot climate, where lesser cameras might melt when leave your car parked in the sun for too long.
Due to the lower bit rate, the LK-7900′s video quality is not quite as good as the DOD LS300W's, but still very good at day and above average at night. The LK-7900 is small and round, making it hardly visible when affixed behind your rear view mirror. A GPS logger is included.
Optionally, you can acquire a so-called circular polarizing lens (CPL) separately for this camera. A CPL filter reduces reflections on the windshield when driving around in sunny weather (this is a problem that all dash cams have). Remember to remove it at night though, otherwise your video will be too dark.
  • BlackVue DR550GW-2CH - Full Featured Dual Channel Dash Cam
http://classicsscars.blogspot.com/
The BlackVue DR550GW-2CH dual channel cam tops off our list of the best dashboard cameras for 2014. At $450, this is the costliest and also by far the most luxurious of the five cameras presented here.
First of all, dual channel means it records out your front and rear windows. While the main camera unit is mounted on your windshield as usual, a smaller camera looks out through your rear window and records whatever is going on behind you. The two are connected by a long coaxial cable.
While the front camera records great quality 1080p video, the rear camera records at reduced resolution of 720p, which is naturally not as detailed as 1080p but the rear footage is still quite alright.
This camera doesn't have a screen, but it is one of very few dash cams that support Wi-Fi. This means you can connect it wirelessly to your smart phone or laptop. Moreover, this camera comes with an in-built GPS logger. It also has a voice menu feature, which allows you to easily operate it while driving.
